Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese art of healing, where the skin is penetrated to a depth of a few
millimeters by hairlike needles, which are then lightly manipulated and, after several minutes,
withdrawn and discarded. One may feel a prickling sensation when the needle is first inserted,
followed by a cramping or distending feeling, but there is no real pain, and seldom a drop or two of
blood.  The oldest record of acupuncture dates to bone-etchings around 1600 B.C., although the
first book on acupuncture was written about 200 B.C..  Today, there is a large body of textbooks and
other references, and it is taught at colleges of oriental medicine in China, and numerous
accredited teaching institutions in this country.

It is impossible to explain in a few words how acupuncture works, but suffice it to say that,
according to Chinese medicine, most pain an functional disorders often are the result of blockages
and/or stagnation somewhere within the network of Qi (pronounced 'chi') channels throughout the
body, 'Qi' being the life-force of a living being.  After diagnosis, as to the type and location of the
stagnation, needles are then inserted into the appropriate sites to unblock the channels and allow
for the free flow of Qi within them, thus relieving the pain, depression, P.M.S., addiction, etc.
